When trying to upgrade to the newest version of Calibre (7.18), I got the following message:

1) Click on "Applications Menu" on your taskbar
2) Click on "MX Tools"
3) Click on "MX Boot Options"
4) Enter your password
5) There is an option "Boot To". Open the drop down menu by clicking on it
6) Select the kernel you want to boot to that has systemd
7) Click on the check box that says "Enable ...

It's possible this is a corrupted install, or that their hard drive is having issues. If you can't see the option to change desktop environments after logging out, that's a good indicator something is wrong with the install. Also, systems don't normally change desktop environments on their own.

Easiest solution is to backup all your data (including all of your bookmarks and passwords in your browser). Then write down all the programs you need on a piece of paper.

Your old laptop likely needs a re-install to the latest version of MX Linux, so download the iso, and either use MX's live USB ...

Can you post "Quick System Info" about your device? The problem might be the particular network card you're using in Kernel 5.10.0.14-amd64. Posting system info will help the mods with responding:

Try gtkpod (search for it in Synaptic Package Manager).

I just did some testing. adding ecryptfs-utils from te root account should work to restore access to home folder.
