Doing the usual MX23 update/upgrade on a live usb stick with root persistence:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
And getting "Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"
Not sure what to do. The full process below:
sudo apt upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency ...
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

I'm a little late to this thread, but the ONLY way I use MX21 is as a live USB with persistence. Once loaded up it is as fast as an SSD in real world use.

I updated the kernal to the most recent 5.x version in the MX repostory. It did not solve the backlight adjustment problem.
But I did stumble across a work-around using the excellent MX Tweaks.
MX Tweaks > Display tab > then set the brightness where you wish. The setting holds between reboots.

There may be a bug for adjusting brightness with the Fn - brightness keys. The dim-to-bright popup displays, but the bar adjusting brightness cannot be moved. It is stuck right in the middle at about 50 percent.

As already noted, it is one of those in-between the most simple such as Mousepad, and the most sophisticated such as Geany.
