If it is the Pulseaudio Profile setting that is changing in pavucontrol, will not help to try to set ALSA slots

get Pulseaudio information with;
pactl list cards

note card ' Name ' (likely similar to mine 'alsa_card.pci-0000_04_06.0' with different numbers)

and ' Active Profile ' (possibly ...

sudo start-pulseaudio-x11

should not run Pulseaudio as root with a DE(except for some headless systems) - What Is Wrong With System mode

start-pulseaudio-x11 will not work to start pulseaudio.service MX is not using systemd in the same way as Manjaro

for simple audio recording I use BUTT
although it is usually for connecting to an icecast stream I have used it as a recorder occasionally
works in ALSA, Pulseaudio or JACK; records to mp3, Ogg, FLAC and more

But i would usually want a bigger set of tools in JACK for mixing and DSP of mic, VOIP ...

I didn't like using tabs in Thunar as i found it harder to keep track of files when moving things between folders, so still use two windows
