I believe snapshot was developed from Refracta. The link is below and these tools should work on a Debian install.

@ Richard, there is a Debian package that will do all the hard work for you, it's:- "grub-imageboot". I've used it in the past for Clonezilla from grub but not recently. Doubt that persistence would work though.

Nicely explained, but not sure about using dd on a running system. It will work, but could easily create a corrupt image if anything is written to disk during the operation, as you have illustrated. Slightly off topic, but I remember those Saline days. It was a very good system.
Nowadays I always install two systems per hard drive. One to use daily and one to use for repair. Daily I'm using MX with Manjaro as second choice.
