MX Linux Boots Into Blank Desktop

#1 Post by Apoc »

I’ve recently installed MX Linux 18.3 on my laptop.
Intel I7 with NVIDIA 1050 TI gaming laptop
It seems fine until i booted the live system. It booted up a blank desktop, I could move my mouse, and that was it. Nothing else was working. I can’t get the console are anything. I had to hard reboot and now I’m just looking for answers, I can boot to the GRUB. If I check advanced I only get an amd64 and amd64 (systems). Not sure what happened at this point.

Edit to clear things up:
This is the MX that has been installed on the laptop. An I7 NVIDIA gaming laptop. After I try to load the desktop (after grub) the desktop loads, the bar in the left loads with the time and I can move my mouse. That is all. This is MX 18.3. In the grub for advanced boot, amd64 shows up which I found odd because I only have an Intel/NVIDIA hardware. ( Unless I confused the amd64 meaning).

So you're running the liveUSB, right, not the install.

What you COULD try is pressing e once you see grub, and add xorg=mesa at the end of the line that has splash and such in it.

No guarantees, I could be saying it completely wrong as I am doing this from memory and I cannot find the actual info LOL *mutter* but at least it is only live and not permanent, worth to try though :)

I think you have a second display connected, which acts as your primary desktop. If that's so, try whether disconnecting it helps.

Sorry, but the description is really confusing... If you mean, you can't boot the installed one but can boot the live-usb (live session) then can you post Quick System Info using that ? (please paste between code tags, you'll see the icon above like < / >)

Try removing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. IIRC some.folks have an issue where the xfce desktop doesn't load up correctly when the basic xorg.conf is present.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Yeah I realized that, it’s 5 AM and I haven’t slept. I was able to launch it just fine if I go through systemd in the advanced options. It just seems all confusing now. It might be better for me to switch back to Mint. The drivers and everything were working fine.

You can easily set things up to to load that as the default you know :)

Is this a Dell laptop? They often need to have the nouveau driver driver blacklisted at boot, or you do get the Black Screen of Death at boot. You don't need that after installing the Nvidia drivers, but it then may need another boot cheat to get working correctly.
